About PHP Black Book.com

Welcome to PHP Black Book.com. This page describes the ideas behind PHP Black Book.com. The author, Peter Moulding, is covered in About Peter Moulding.

PHP Black Book is named after the PHP Black Book published by Coriolis to celebrate the release of PHP 4 in 2000. PHP Black Book was the first How To book on PHP and the first book introducing the advantages of PHP 4.

Prior to the PHP Black Book, the only PHP books were references with, perhaps, a few suggestions for use. Universities made the PHP Black Book required reading.

After the PHP Black Book created a new category in Amazon, and hit their top seller list, 20 other publishers woke up to the popularity of PHP. Collectively, the other publishers swamped the market with over 50 books.

How did the 50 plus books compare? There was one excellent book on PHP used with MySQL. Some of the other books were of less quality. The PHP Black Book had just four typographical errors in over 800 pages. One of the first competitors from a "highly rated" publisher had 200 errors in just the first chapter.

PHP Black Book.com was initially created to highlight the four typos and provide the correct text. The book included a CD containing all the example code. Some buyers reported problems reading part of the CD. PHP Black Book.com provided downloads for the problem files.

PHP Black Book.com then added expansions and updates as PHP evolved. Today PHP Black Book.com covers experiments with PHP 7.2.
